History, Concept and Background

Rajasthan Vidyapeeth which was founded on the 21st August 1937 by Pt. Janardan Rai Nagar, who was a noted Gandhian, Reformer, Social Activist, Educationist and a Freedom Fighter in true sense. He established a “Night College” to prepare the students who would appear in the examinations of the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan. Various “Night Colleges” were set up under the aegis of Rajasthan Vishwa Vidyapeeth, where the youth and adults would earn their bread during the day and would study in the night, in the light of lanterns. Rajasthan Vishwa Vidyapeeth was formally registered under the Mewar Societies Registration Act of 1941. The government of Rajasthan in 1956, conveyed the approval of the government for starting a higher secondary school by the Rajasthan Vidyapeeth.

1957
Government Approval

The Government of India approved grant-in-aid for Rajasthan Vidyapeeth during the First Five Year Plan. This support enabled expansion of library facilities and publication activities. It marked the beginning of continued funding from both State and Central governments.

Deemed University Proposal

Rajasthan Vidyapeeth formally submitted its proposal for Deemed University status. This proposal reflected the institution’s academic progress and social impact. The submission initiated a multi-step evaluation by national authorities.

18-09-1980
UGC Expert Committee Visit

A UGC-appointed expert committee conducted an extensive two-day evaluation. The committee examined academic activities, infrastructure, and community work. It recommended granting Deemed University status to Rajasthan Vidyapeeth.

12-01-1987
Deemed University Status

The Central Government officially granted Deemed University status. This recognition came after UGC recommendations and 1985 distance-education regulations. Rajasthan Vidyapeeth entered a new phase of academic autonomy and growth.

1987
National Award for Child Development

The University received the National Award for Child Development from MHRD. The award recognized its pioneering role in non-formal education programs. Special focus was given to its work for rural women and children.

2003
Renamed as JRNRV University

The University was renamed Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth. This change honored the legacy of its visionary founder after his demise. The new name strengthened the institutional identity across India.

Present
Fully Developed University

JRNRV now operates across three major campuses with modern facilities. It offers programmes across Humanities, Science, Commerce, Law, Nursing, IT and more. The University continues its mission of empowering youth, especially tribal youth.
