Rajasthan Vidyapeeth which was founded on the 21st August 1937 by Pt. Janardan Rai Nagar, who was a noted Gandhian, Reformer, Social Activist, Educationist and a Freedom Fighter in true sense. He established a “Night College” to prepare the students who would appear in the examinations of the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan. Various “Night Colleges” were set up under the aegis of Rajasthan Vishwa Vidyapeeth, where the youth and adults would earn their bread during the day and would study in the night, in the light of lanterns. Rajasthan Vishwa Vidyapeeth was formally registered under the Mewar Societies Registration Act of 1941. The government of Rajasthan in 1956, conveyed the approval of the government for starting a higher secondary school by the Rajasthan Vidyapeeth.
The Government of India, Ministry of Education, in 1957 approved the proposal of Rajasthan Vidyapeeth for grant-in-aid for extension of library and publication of literature during the First Five Year Plan.
Since then Rajasthan Vidyapeeth along with its constituent units has been funded by Rajasthan government and the Central Government under various schemes like the faculty support, infrastructure development, salary, equipment etc. Rajasthan Vidyapeeth ran a night college which was the only night College in the state of Rajasthan. The proposal for consideration of status of deemed university was submitted by Rajasthan Vidyapeeth on the 21st December 1978. An expert committee constituted by the UGC visited the institution on the 18th and 19th September 1980. The UGC expert committee recommended that Rajasthan Vidyapeeth should be granted deemed university status.
After coming in force of the UGC Regulations, 1985 regarding the Minimum Standards of Instructions for the Grant of First Degree through Non Formal/Distance Education the Central Government accepted the recommendations of the UGC and conferred upon Rajasthan Vidyapeeth the status of deemed university on the 12th January 1987. The same year Rajasthan Vidyapeeth was conferred upon with the “National Award for Child Development” for its contribution and pioneering works in the field of non formal education for rural women and children by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. After the demise of the founder of the University the name of the University was changed to Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth in the year 2003 in the memory of its founder. The institution has functioned as a deemed university for the past 28 years and has grown into a full-fledged university.
Today, the University has well-developed faculties of Social Sciences, Humanities, Science, Commerce, Agriculture, Social Work, Education, Homeopathy, Physiotherapy Technology & Engineering, Computer Science & I.T., Management Studies, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing, in addition to Institutions for Rajasthan Studies, Lok Shikshan and Extension Education. We are also running one evening college and two girls colleges. JRNRV is spread over three campuses– Main Campus, City Campus and Dabok Campus. The mission of the University is knowledge empowerment of youth, especially tribal youth, for enhancement of the quality of their life.
